Before you go...
Check the right hand box for a list of things to consider, and see below for some useful sites and further information on visas, safe travel, vaccines, finances, permits, passports and more.
Visa
It's really important to ensure that you have all the necessary visas in order before you go. Consider issues such as the time you'll be going for, what nationality or passports you hold, where you'll be travelling from and till as well as restrictions on how long you must have had your visa for.
And don't forget that some countries are notoriously slow when it comes to granting visas.
Safety
Staying safe when travelling is just common sense and no different to staying safe in the UK. But in some countries there are some extra things you can do.
Check out these excellent links which provide some very sound advice.
House
Sadly you can't just lock the door and walk away, it's important to get someone to keep an eye on the place while you're away, turning heating off if it comes in summer and checking for damage etc.
Perhaps a lodger or someone to rent the flat on a short term basis would be a good idea.
Check here for some links to places that do this. It will also help pay the mortgage/rent!
Finances
Make sure you've researched all the options available concerning ways for you to carry and access money when abroad.
Also make sure to set up a bank account with a bank which doesn't charge for foreign currency.
Medical
Getting the necessary vaccines and stocking up with all the pills you need is a good idea, in some cases it pays to be safe rather than sorry and a lot of countries still have a number of serious diseases. Make sure you've thought about:
- Malaria
- Vaccines for Africa
- Alternative treatments and therapies
- Airsickness
Pets
If you do have to leave an animal or two behind, try to be rational about what you or a family member can manage, and what is really necessary.
Have a look here for kennels, dog walkers and lodgers who might be prepared to look after your pet for the duration of your trip.
Practical Stuff
Dont' forget...
Passport
Is yours in date? Does it have the necessary stamps and visas?
Tickets
Keep these in one place as you start booking things, and make several copies.
Visas
Check with the links on this page about what you need for where. But make sure you get them organised in enough time!
Permits
If you want to work abroad you might need a permit. Click here for more information.
Vaccines
Don't risk having to return home early because you've caught something horrible. Check the links on this page for info about what you need where.
Medicines
Malaria pills and other medicines can be lifesavers when away; make sure you've got everything you need.
Finances
Check where you can use you bank card, and what banks offer good deals on foreign currency. For more info check the links on this page.
Pets
You may need to find someone to babysit the cat, feed the hamster or walk the dog. It can be a big undertaking but if you're organised it doesn't need to stop you going.
Home
If you live alone you might need someone to keep an eye on your house. Perhaps a lodger or temporary rental might be a good idea. Check the links for some ideas.
